Jeff Fisher is a former American football player and coach. Born on February 25, 1958, in Culver City, California, he played college football at the University of Southern California as a defensive back and later played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears from 1981 to 1985.
Fisher is best known for his long coaching career in the NFL. He began his coaching career as a defensive assistant with the Bears and eventually became a defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles. He got his first head coaching job with the Houston Oilers, who later became the Tennessee Titans. Fisher was the head coach of the Oilers/Titans franchise from 1994 to 2010, leading the team to a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance in 2000, where they narrowly lost to the St. Louis Rams.
After his tenure with the Titans, Fisher became the head coach of the St. Louis Rams (later the Los Angeles Rams) from 2012 to 2016. He is known for having one of the longest head coaching tenures in NFL history, though his teams often achieved mixed results, and he has been criticized for a lack of playoff appearances later in his career.
Fisher is recognized for his defensive coaching acumen and his ability to lead teams through transitions, such as when the Houston Oilers relocated to become the Tennessee Titans. He often served on league committees, contributing to discussions on rules and competition. Though he has not coached in the NFL since being dismissed by the Rams in 2016, his lengthy career and influence on the game remain notable.
